This marks the beginning of a new series called “Coffee And The Creative Process.” I’ll be asking different people in different crafts one question: If you lost all access to coffee, how would that change your creative process?

I asked this of the filmmaker David Altrogge, who also happens to be my brother-in-law:

“I hope it wouldn’t change my process at all. I drink one cup of regular coffee in the morning. Decaf the rest of the day. I guess I do rely on the process of stepping away from projects to clear my head.”

My answer to this question:

I try to write really early in the morning, and I probably wouldn’t be able to without coffee. My schedule would change; I think my days would feel like they need to be shorter, at least in the beginning of not having coffee. It would be difficult.
